Good Conversation Starters Help People Open Up
Good conversation starters can come in many forms and they can be either pre-prepared or something you pick up on due to social cues. Whatever the case, everyone needs to have some good conversation starters in mind to use in any situation, especially if conversing off the cuff is not one of your skills.
The best thing to do is think about good conversation starters that you can use in any situation so no matter what happens when you find yourself in either a spontaneous or planned social situation you will be able to handle it with conversational ease.
Also, if you have good conversation starters prepared then you will be able to start conversations rather than waiting for someone to start a conversation with you, so it gives you control. Consider the following good conversation starters to always keep in mind.
1. Compliment
Good conversation starters can mean paying a compliment. It does not matter what you compliment, it can be shoes, jewelry, a car, home, accessory, furniture, landscape, any number of things, but a compliment will put the other person at ease, make them feel proud and happy to share information about the item that was complimented.
At this point a conversation has been started and you can continue on the current topic by asking specific questions to further guide the topic or make a final statement on the topic followed by a new question to redirect the conversation.
2. Ask an Interest Question
Asking interesting questions can also be good conversation starters. Ask the person a question about something that interests you and you will be able to converse openly about the subject.
If the response you receive does not leave any more room for discussion on that particular topic then you can ask the person you are conversing with a question about something that interests them to keep the conversation going. Be flexible and use more good conversation starters.
3. Comment on Events
Make a comment on current events or your current situation is another of many good conversation starters. If you are seated next to someone on a plane then you can make a comment about the new aircraft, services, or destinations to start the conversation.
However, if you want you can always bring up different current events from weather to politics to the economy or any other topic you feel comfortable conversing with another person about. Do make sure you are knowledgeable about the questions you ask so you can offer answers and responses as well.
4. Personal Questions
Personal questions will always be good conversation starters because people enjoy talking about themselves and their lives. So, personal questions like “what is your profession,” “how many kids do you have,” “where did you go to college,” “where did you grow up,” and other questions will be certain to provide responses and will not make the individual you are conversing with feel uneasy or unsure.
In fact, people enjoy talking about themselves and their lives because it is such an easy topic.
Using good conversation starters will certainly make starting a conversation easy and even a lot of fun.
